Lisa Tawn Bergren’s new YA series, River of Time, is romantic, historical fiction in which the plucky heroine doesn’t have to fear a vampire’s bite but must still fight for her life.

In Waterfall, American teenager Gabi Betarrini accidently finds herself in Fourteenth-Century Italy . . . Knights. Swords. Horses. Armor. And Italian hotties. Most American teens want an Italian vacation, but the Betarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives there with their archaeologist parents. Stuck on yet another hot, dusty dig, they are bored out of their minds… until they place their hands atop handprints in an ancient tomb and find themselves catapulted into the Fourteenth Century and in the middle of a fierce battle between knights bent on killing one another.

Going back in time has never been this easy and fun! Lisa Bergren has created the perfect Historical Fiction.  Most of us wish that we could go back in time for a number of reasons… Gabi and her sister are transported hundreds of years in the past… the question is do they really want to stay or find their way back to the present.

I have never been a fan of Historical Fiction – – the facts are usually completely wrong, and the author assumes the readers know about historical references without explanation (I blame my personal frustrations and annoyances on my History degree).  Lisa Bergren however has created the perfect type of Historical Fiction in a way.  There are no assumptions of knowledge.  Along with Gabi, readers explore the 14th century without out any or much prior knowledge.  You learn as Gabi learns.  This particular aspect of this novel really has set Waterfall separate from other Historical Fictions.

While Waterfall can be seen as Historical Fiction it is so much more than that.  I became invested in Gabi’s story from the moment she was transported into the 14th century.  It is very hard not to.  Gabi is alone, having lost her sister.  But despite her being singled out constantly she is brave, strong, and resilient. Gabi would not have it any other way.

Gabi is not the only character you will come to love.  Her love interest, Marcello, is everything a ‘knight in shinning armor’ should be.  Just like Gabi points out “Fantasizing about an Italian hottie was far better than my normal dreams“.  Of course being with Marcello is not as easy as one would hope for.  Then there is Luca, Marcello’s right hand man.  Luca is quirky, quick witted, and overall lovable – I found myself numerous times laughing out loud at his comments and actions.

Lisa Bergren has created an amazing new series for Young Adults, The River of Time.  Her style of writing flows with ease and her characters are believable, despite being transported back into time.  If you have not read this series yet you must.  You will not be able to put this book down.
