My Soul to Keep (Soul Screamers #3) by Rachel Vincent
Publisher:  Harlequin
Published:   June 1st 2010
Paperback, 296 pages

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.
Until something does.

Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.

And so is someone else…

My Soul to Take literally picks up a month after My Soul To Save.  Kaylee has been grounded for a month, after she and Nash traveled to the Netherworld to save save a Pop-Princess’, soul.  Kaylee has known she is a bean sidhe for a very short time, but already she has done and been through more than ‘humans’ experience in a few lifetimes.  Her saving grace is Nash.  Being away from Nash for a whole month was unbearable and she is ready to spend time with him again.  She is ready to be a “normal” girl with her “normal” boyfriend.  That is until her classmates start acting crazy – literally crazy! A drug, Demon Breath, some how has found its way from the Netherworld to her world.

“…the effects of Demon’s Breath on a human are irreversible. If he takes enough to actually sever his tie to reality, cutting off his source may save his life, but it won’t fix him.”
Despite everything that Kaylee has already been through, she cannot stand by and let her friends and classmates turn crazy or even be killed by this drug.  However, the consequences of Demon Breath hits much closer to home than she could ever expect.
My Soul To Keep was amazing! There were many unexpected surprises and “Oh My God” moments! Rachel Vincent’s writing style, the plots, and the characters flow with such ease, one moment you are starting the novel and the next moment you are done.  Kaylee is a very strong, unique, and real character.  She continues to stand up for what she believes in, while admitting her mistakes along the way.  And of course at times she acts like a normal teenage girl.  She has really come into herself from the very beginning of the series, and there are more sequels to come.
Nash… well what can I say about him without giving anything away.  So I won’t! You will just have to read the novel yourself.  But I am dying to talk about Emma.  I love her! She is the perfect best friend.  I for one am a bit jealous of Kaylee’s and Emma’s relationship.  No matter what, Emma stands by Kaylee’s side.  Just like Kaylee, she is a very strong character.  Emma knows that the Netherworld exists and that Kaylee is a bean sidhe; even though Kaylee doesn’t tell her everything (like why her classmates are going crazy) she doesn’t push Kaylee for further explanation.  That is real trust.
Overall, My Soul To Take is a MUST read – the entire Soul Screamers series is a MUST read!  Everything about this series (the characters, plot) is unique and worth every page of reading.
